August 2009
In spring 2009 Team London Bridge secured funding from Southwark Council to upgrade the area to the rear of Becket House on Melior Street. The area had a long history of anti-social behaviour and the leaseholder did not have the capacity at the time to manage the space and keep it to a standard that befits its location.
Local architects Cracknell were appointed to take the project forward. The plans included a community herb and vegetable garden, a potting shed, reclaimed timber planters and plenty of communal areas to sit and enjoy the green oasis. The garden is maintained by St. Mungo's and their 'Putting Down Root's' programme every Tuesday.
Melior Street Community Garden is now a well-kept, welcoming space. Produce from the garden is sold to local cafes and restaurants and any proceeds are put back into the Putting Down Roots programme.
